‘A chaotic house that loves its Mum’

Image
I remember the day Daisy and I found out we were having twins.   Sitting with the doctor who told us the news that our baby was healthy and looking great.   “And moving onto the second one…”   The second one? Twins. One was life changing. Two babies at once and my head was spinning.   Daise being Daise, though, she was excited, calm and in control – I reckon her career as a midwife meant she might have been on to the possibility of twins before we got to the appointment.   We recently celebrated Sylvie and Roy’s first birthday. Just 12 months since Daisy was pregnant, puffy and what seemed miles off the athlete she would need to be to return to the game and team she loves.   Daise had gone from weighing 58kg to 94kg just before the twins arrived.   I remember one moment in the weeks before they were born. The physical toll was beginning to mount up and she was feeling it and so off she went to see her osteo for a pregnancy massage. The osteo was about five foot tall and n

The true terror of the fires

Image
The fire was about 500 metres from my parents’ farm when the wind changed direction. They were pretty lucky. It was touch-and-go for a while.   I haven’t been back to Bargo – where I grew up, in the NSW Southern Highlands – since the fires. I’m going there after netball’s bushfire relief game on Sunday.   It will be a bit of a shock. I’ve seen photos of friends’ houses and there’s just nothing standing. A lot of my friends and family friends and a lot of my brother’s football teammates lost their homes or farms.   Even just in our little town, which is tiny, there were about 30 houses gone. And it’s the kind of place where everyone knows everyone. Where we are, Mum says everything’s just black, and at the moment everything’s also flooded, so it’s really weird. One extreme to the other.   I was about nine when my family moved from western Sydney out onto five acres. We got asked by our parents whether we wanted to have another baby brother or sister or whether we wanted to live

Goodbye I wasn’t ready for

Image
It was a moment that would make any teenager squirm.   I was 14, about to play in my first country cricket championships, the best female cricketers in NSW, which at the time boasted most of the Aussie team. I was really nervous, just keeping to myself and hoping I’d do OK.   Then Dad walked up to me and said, ‘Have you told them you’re an opening bowler’.   I replied, ‘No dad, I’m just happy to be here! Stop it!’   He said, ‘No, no, no. Go on, go tell them you’re an opening bowler!’   Sensing my reluctance, a few minutes later, I saw Dad walking up to Sally Shaw, who played for NSW and was captain of our South Coast team. My heart sunk as I watched a conversation unfold from afar, which, judging by the motioning towards me and dads impeccable seam up shadow bowling, appeared to be dad making a case for me. I was beside myself.   A few minutes later Sal comes over, taps me on the shoulder and says, ‘I hear you’re an opening bowler’. I mumbled something about I’m happy just

Never felt anything like it

Image
In 2008 I had a bit of a lightbulb moment. At the official opening of the Rugby League World Cup in Sydney, we played a “Welcome to Country” exhibition game between an Indigenous side and a New Zealand Maori side as a curtain-raiser to the opening match.   I was lucky enough to captain the Indigenous team and we won, but the scoreline was not important.   What I remember is the feeling of pride. I had never felt anything like it on a sporting field, and after the game I kind of wondered why it felt that way.   Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate every single opportunity I got in rugby league. I played for four clubs – the Gold Coast Chargers (1998), Cronulla Sharks (1999-2002), Penrith Panthers (2003-2006) and Gold Coast Titans (2007-2011) – and each club gave me so much. I have always been so grateful for everything the game has given me.   But this was a different sort of connection, a connection more like family. It was overwhelming for many of the players, not just me. They ne

Some Natural Remedies for Glowing Skin

Factors that can trigger excess melanin production include sun exposure and hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy. Dark spots can also occur as a result of inflammation or trauma to the skin, such as from: acne bug bites burns cuts psoriasis and other skin conditions a reaction to skin care products Even everyday skin care practices can contribute to the development of dark spots.
